Yesterday, Alyzza PMed me her dad's death certificate and waiver of autopsy. I can email them to those who want to send their donations, for verification purposes.

Ricardo L. Sanchez passed away last May 26.

The family had initially wanted to hold the interment on Friday, June 3. But since they still don't have the funds to pay the funeral home or to pay for burial, the wake will probably extend beyond Friday. Alyssa has PMed me blurry photos of her dad's PGH blue card and the white form from PGH that has the details of her dad's passing, for the preparation of the death certificate.

I only know Alyzza through Az's post. I've never met her. I hope to update this post with more data after I get them from Alyzza. Her dad's name is Ricardo Sanchez. Alyssa PMed me that her dad died of Stage 4 liver cancer, and that she's willing to PM her dad's results to donors.

My classmate LT is undecided on who to vote for senator, so I thought of putting some info together in one page.

Which of these senators do I recommend?

First on my list is Richard Gordon, who would be President if it were only up to me.  We've seen what he has done with volunteers at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. Our family stayed in one of the houses in the 90s. The volunteer service we got would put the Bayad Center Shoppesville to shame. We also saw how cars would stop at intersections and take turns going. The only place I know where people are this afraid of breaking laws would be in Makati. Say what you will about Jajejomar (--Jon Santos) Binay, but Makati is the most efficient city that I've been to in the Philippines.

Even without Gordon's work with the Red Cross, and his entertaining and informative radio show, Gordon's the best politician we have.

And I almost forgot. I love his Wow Philippines ads.

Then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed into law Gordon's Veterans Bill, which allowed veterans from receiving benefits from the US government.

Another superstar is Franklin Drilon. Check out all the positions he has held, aside from the ones I'm enumerating in Atimiti. His most outstanding accomplishments are the convictions of Mayor Antonio Sanchez and Claudio Teehankee, Jr., when Drilon was DOJ Secretary. In the Juetengate Scandal, Drilon had opted to open the second envelope. Someone has told me that there was nothing in it, but why all the fuss? 

Anyway, Drilon was President of the Senate that opposed Executive Order 264, which prohibited the Senate from attending Congressional hearings. The same Senate also opposed Proclamation 1017, which imposes a state of national emergency. The Supreme Court upheld the Senate stand on both issues. 

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Drilon was primary author of a law that created an oversight committee for government-operated and -controlled corporations. As Chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, Drilon also worked for the Sin Tax Law.

Drilon was also one of the Senator-Judges who voted for the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

My friend told me to check out Francis Tolentino's malaswang video, which I didn't, so he's here. He's here because under his MMDA term, billboards had size limits. Also under his watch, the Metro Manila Film Festival did away with box office receipts as criteria for winning Best Picture. He also relaunched the Pasig Ferry System. Nice try, but brownie points for effort.

Former Department of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima is in my Magic 12 for filing a case against the Iglesia ni Cristo officers. I recall how she replied to the religious persecution complaint. Something like, Alangan namang I do nothing?

The Judicial Executive Legislative Advisory and Consultative Council was Francis Pangilinan's brainchild. The JELACC was formed to strengthen coordination and consultation among the three branches of government.

Serge Osmena's expose on gross costs led to the cancellation of the Balog-Balog Irrigation Project. He was then Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and the Congressional Oversight Committee on Agricultural and Fisheries Modernization. Osmena also voted for the opening of the second envelope. 

With a "shoe-string budget," he placed 10th in the 2010 elections and became senator for a third time.

I only remember Lorna Kapunan in the Hayden Kho case, where she was his lawyer. It turns out that she was the first person to obtain a Writ of Kalikasan from the Supreme Court on the Barangay Bangkal oil spill case. I wanted to get a third party verification on this, but it seems that Domini Torrevillas just copy-pasted some data from Kapunan's website. 

Anyway, the Supreme Court decided in favor of Kapunan's clients, stewardesses who were dismissed for being 50 years or older.

Kapunan has also worked on pro bono cases for human rights victims and media writers.

If elected, she will work for anti-dynasty, anti-monopoly and fair competition laws. Would be interesting to know the details of these laws.

The thing I have against her is that she used to be Janet Napoles' lawyer, on the kidnapping case.

Ana Theresia Hontiveros-Baraquel has 2 pieces of successful legislation:

• The Cheaper Medicines Law, which allowed parallel importation of medicines to lower their prices; and
• The Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Extension with Reforms, which extends the CARP as well as made it more suitable to farmers.

Walden Bello's Wikipedia page was the most surprising of all, as he had broken in World Bank headquarters and stole 3,000 pages that supposedly showed the connection between the IMF, the World Bank and then-President Ferdinand Marcos.  He talks about these documents in Development Debacle: The World Bank in the Philippines. He left the Communist Party of the Philippines after he heard that double agents were killed. Bello is a critic of economic globalization.

Juan Miguel Zubiri isn't just about resigning amid poll fraud allegations. He is also a biofuel advocate.

I read Susan Ople's Panorama column, where she talks about labor issues. She is President of the Blas Ople Policy Center, which helps distressed OFWs around the world. 

Rafael Alunan is in my so-so list. All I see about him so far is that he's a leader of the West Philippine Sea Coalition, which has protested against China.

I must admit that there are a lot of candidates who I've never heard of. I hope to look into them further.

Pacific Eye & Laser Institute Now Peregrine Eye & Laser Institute

The PELI website is almost the same as before.

Due to the controversy over another company with a similar name, Pacific Eye & Laser Institute has changed its name, but will still retain the PELI acronym. National Geographic says that peregrines are falcons that swoop on other birds and bats in mid-flight. So I guess PELI wants to say that their ophthalmologists have great hand-eye coordination, or that PELI aims to make the patients' eyes so sharp they'll have great claw-eye coordination.

Last year, over breakfast with Drs. Harvey and Pik Sha Uy, I had asked Harvey what makes PELI different. He says that their doctors are US-trained. I asked him where Johns Hopkins is. He said that it was Maryland. Is it in the East Coast? I aksed him. Since he trained in Harvard, and Dr. Franz Cruz trained in Johns Hopkins, I suggested that their name be changed to ECEC or East Coast Eye Center. Pronounced ek-ek, if you like. :)

Incidentally, Thesaurus.com says that peregrination is a synonym of aimless walk. Which makes it somewhat opposite of peregrine the falcon. Just thought that was interesting.

Moringa O2: A Follow

This is an unscientific solo study of Moringa O2 (oxygen, actually). My Ateneo batchmate Angeline Siy-Fiechter had given me a sample, after I asked her what she was up to. Her original products were a whitening line, totally useless to me, as I've been labeled "transparent". When she told me that she has expanded to anti-hair fall, I held on to my few strands and went, "I need that!" She told me that the products were available in SM, the big Watsons and sometimes in Rustan's. I told her I could always go to a Rustan's Supermarket. She wasn't sure if the Watson's in Greenhills would be big enough to carry it.

She was going to have her driver send samples to me. I protested, as we didn't live in the same city, and we were divided by INC's EDSA. So she had the driver and her daughter bring over some oil, shampoo and conditioner samples to our batch party. The shampoo and conditioner were full sized.

The website says to wrap the hair in a warm towel or shower cap for 30 minutes. Warm, as in wrap it around a hot water bag first?  Anyway, I didn't do this after applying the oil. I also just realized that I'm supposed to put on the oil then shower and condition afterwards. I had applied some of the oil, then realized that I was about to shower. When my hair was dry, I put on the oil at the roots, so it would stay there until my shower the next day. The label said to apply the oil from end to end.

Anyway, if I remember correctly: Angeline said that hair could even grow if the oil were used daily. If the roots are still alive, she added. Which I doubt, but libre namang mangarap, at libre rin ang sample.

When I went back, I made a right into the Petron gas station at the corner of Balete and Aurora, turned right into Balete, crossed Aurora to N. Domingo, turned right to Dona Hemady/where Robinsons Magnolia is, turned left at the 1st road/1st St., crossed Gilmore Ave., turned left on Dona Juana Rodriguez Ave./where Broadway Centrum is, then turned right to N. Domingo.

Asuncion Ordonez Wake to Start at 4 PM Today

I just came from Immaculate Conception Cathedral of Cubao. Maripaz Ortiz's mom's wake was moved to 4 pm, said Narsing, who wore an Immaculate Conception shirt. He also added that there will be a Mass at 6 pm. He showed me the exact Chapel where the wake will be. The chapel is on the Lantana side, where "No Parking" signs abound. I think that I parked on the Boston side.

Maripaz Ortiz's Mom's Wake

My kumare Maripaz just texted me that her mom, Asuncion M. Ordonez, passed away at 6:14 AM. Mrs. Ordonez

was the mom of Maria Paz Ordonez Ortiz (AB Psychology, Ateneo de Manila University '86), Fernando "Dindo" M. Ortiz (GS, HS), Caesar "Sonny" Ordonez Jr. (HS, Col, MBA), Patrick "Ricky" Ordonez (GS, HS, Col). The wake will start at around 2-3 pm later at the Chapel of the Ascension in Immaculate Conception Basilica.

Greenhills Shopping Center, Shangri-La Plaza Only Malls Closed on New Year's Day?

I took this photo last December 24.

Is it only this year that malls started opening on December 25 and January 1?  Except for Shangri-La Plaza, which was open on Christmas Day but closed on New Year's Day, it seems that the same malls open on Dec. 25 is also open on Jan. 1. In other words, all the malls except Greenhills and Shangri-La Plaza. Podium, on the other hand, is open on January 1 but closed on New Year's Eve. At least, that's what I understand, since the SM Malls poster says that the sked is same for all malls except as noted. Then it lists SM Megamall, for example, which includes a December 31 sked that's the same as the all malls sked. For Podium, there is only a January 1 sked. Does it mean that Podium has the same sked as the other malls on Dec. 24 and 31, or is it closed?  If the Podium sked is the same as the other malls', would it have been listed?

It's funny how Power Plant's holiday sked did not include January 1.

Another thing that I noticed is that malls don't have someone managing their sites and resort to using Fb to make their holiday announcements e.g. Market! Market. SM Supermalls even has a separate blogspot. Any blogger would know how to operate a wordpress or blogspot site. SM, all you need to do is train someone to update your site--use wordpress, for example, for easy use, then have a committee of approvers. In this Smartphone age, it would be easy to do this.

Also, does Ayala know that when you type Trinoma, you land in SM North EDSA, which claims that Trinoma has been merged with SM North?

Another thing that I realized, while doing this, that the "mall open" sources only refer to Metro Manila. Except Summit Express, which posted photos of each mall group. Not that easy to follow. My former co-agent, Ruby Ochoa, works in an Ayala Mall in Mindanao. Maybe she can tell me about her mall's holiday sked?

While malls have gone from closed to open, BDO has gone the opposite way and will be closed on December 31 and January 1. 6 years ago i. e. 1999, BDO was open on Dec. 31.

Lucky Chinatown Mall Open Tomorrow

Where do you go on Christmas Day? Tonight on TV5, Lourd de Veyra tells people who want to go aguinaldo hopping that tomorrow's rains will be light to moderate.

One Christmas Day, I asked my balikbayan friend and her husband where they wanted to go since the malls were closed.

I gave them 2 choices: Ateneo or the Pen for halo-halo. He said that he was open to halo-halo, if it was necessary. Ha!

Anyway, it was my first time to go to Lucky Chinatown Mall last Monday. I was just thinking that Eastwood would probably be open on Dec. 25, because of the call cenuhs.

Then I realized that Megaworld also owns Lucky, so I looked at the mall hours sign closely.

According to Pinoy Money Talk, Eastwood City is open on Christmas Day. And so are other malls like Alabang Town Center, Bonifacio High Street, Glorietta, Market! Market!, MOA, Power Plant Mall and Trinoma. It seems that the only big mall that's closed is Greenhills Shopping Center. There was no mention of Aura and SM North's Dec. 25 skeds.

Now, is Lucky Chinatown Mall worth going to?  I was there for a Mann Hann lunch and saw Daiso, UCC and other stores that you see elsewhere. Except for an ice cream stall that I had not seen before.

Go to your friend's timeline, click on the toggle beside "Friends," and unclick "Show in News Feed."

Maid Who Assaulted Amo Still at Large

My friend emailed me this beware message on her aunt's maid who made the news:

"On Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 11:33 AM, [name and email address withheld] wrote:

Beware of this innocent looking girl!  This maid robbed and inflicted injuries on our aunt.  Any information leading to her and her arrest will be appreciated by my cousins' family. The CCTV was not able to capture the crime because this maid turned off the main switch of the circuit breaker. After hearing her horror story and other maid related horror stories, it appears that an NBI clearance is not much help. I heard that some applicants are able to get 3 NBI clearances under different names. Aside from taking a photograph, it will be good to get all fingerprints of the applicant for your file (our condominium application form even has 6 slots per hand). For those with CCTVs, check if it can capture dark areas.  Is it connected to an uninterrupted power supply (UPS)? My cousin was murdered several years ago by her day old maid.  To date, that murderer maid is free and we don't even have a photo. Praying for everyone's safety at home. Forwarding my cousin's facebook post:   WARNING: BEWARE OF THIS MAID SHE ATTACKED MY MOM (TITA BABY TO MOST OF YOU) Thursday around 6pm her new maid (1 week) poured cooking oil all over the floor outside her bedroom leading to the dining room, after she turned the main switch of the circuit breaker off to make it appear there's no power. When mom got out of the room, she slipped but did not totally fall on the floor, she was able to hold on to a chair nearby. She dropped the cellphones she held on the same chair. She quickly got up and even asked the maid to get some rags to place over the oil. Holding her flashlight, she was trying to scan the ceiling for leaks while walking towards the stairs to go up and check the next floor. She told the maid to go ahead of her because she can't see and had difficulty walking due to the slip. She noticed the maid holding a bottle of whiskey. When asked the maid said the alcohol can be used for the slippery floor. She thought nothing of it and on the second floor mom noticed all the drawers were open. They checked to see one of the rooms and if there were any open windows. After checking she went back to the stairs to go down this time the maid was behind her. The maid pushed and kicked her towards the stairs. She fell and when she reached the bottom of the stairs the maid swung the bottle at her. She instinctively covered her head with her right arm so the bottle hit her hand and head. The maid then sprayed wd40 in here eyes and was about to hit her when she leaped from the bottom of the stairs back to her bedroom door. She was able to lock herself in the room, opened the back window and cried for help. When help arrived from my aunt living next door, the maid was gone and was able to sneak out the village guard. Mom suffered head injuries, 2 completely fractured fingers and bruises on her back, hands and feet. Thank god CT Scan and X-ray supported that these were the only injuries. When I went back with the inspectors, on the dining table was another mallet and a separated scissor to be used had she slipped flat on her back. THIS MAID GOES BY THE NAME OF RUBILYN NATIVIDAD MAPE FROM CAGAYAN (according to her biodata). ANY INFORMATION LEADING TO HER WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED. OUR FAMILY ALONG WITH THE COPS ARE STILL SEARCHING." Rubilyn was a referral.

Atimiti Switches to Ethereal

I changed my template because Dynamic was unwieldy.

For the same reason that I changed the template of TV Guide Philippines, I'm changing the template of Atimiti. That is, I had a hard time scrolling up and down.

Now that blogspot is coming up with options, why not put in other features like word count and better layouts like Wordpress has?

Plus better tech support.

Leaning Towards an Altis

My dad sold the Altis at P 260,000, when I saw Altises of the same year and similar kilometer readings at the P 300,000 to P 400,000 plus range in Sulit.com.

Anyway, since his friends got Santa Fes, he was thinking of getting one, too. We headed to the Greenhills dealership, where my mom couldn't hop onto it or the Tucson. So my dad asked about the Camry equivalent, the Elantra, and the Altis equivalent, the Sonata. He wants to get a Korean car because he's worried about a Japanese-Chinese war. When we got home, I saw on TV that North Korea is threatening South Korea.

Anyway, I thought that since the office has an Innova and a Fortuner, that a sedan would use up less gas when you're transporting four people without cargo, and it would be easier for my 3i, my mom and me to get on a sedan, especially when we're wearing gowns. The Altis was the special request car for my mom and 3i whenever we went out.

MA said that his mom prefers the CRV to a sedan, because his mom doesn't have to stoop to get in. My dad says that Hondas have low resale values and have expensive parts. My concern is that my friend says that the sold Altis has a better turning radius than her Civic. I'd like to take all the cars we're considering for test drives.

My friend, who, with her parents, were Harvey's patients in Asian Eye Institute, wanted to know what his clinic hours are, and urged me to blog them.

The new name of all his clinics is Pacific Eye & Laser Institute.

Yesterday, its first day, I was the sixth patient in the history of the Makati Surgical Center. It is located where The Spa used to be, at 50 Jupiter St., Bel-Air. The eyp interactive map is here.

From Kalayaan, I turned left to Makati Avenue, turned left to Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue (because you can't turn left on Jupiter St., contrary to what someone not connected to Pacific had advised me), turned left on Paseo, then turned left on Jupiter. It's a few buildings down on the right. Parking is ample, but with tricky curves. DFC parked in the closed building at the corner before it.

I almost hit a curve, if not for my co-IRB member, Atty. Bernard Kaw, the first time I tried to park in the basement, so the last time I was there, I parked in BBQ five buildings away on false pretenses, so I have to be creative--again--the next time I go there, if Pacific still does not have valet parking.

Anyway, from Jupiter, the best way out is to go towards Makati Avenue, turn right at Polaris, turn left after Anzo, turn right at P. Burgos, right at Kalayaan, right at Amapola, follow the road until it becomes Rockwell Drive.

Going to Makati Med, the best way is turn left to Nicanor Garcia from Jupiter, turn right at Gil Puyat, turn right at Zuellig Loop (I think, it's the street before Ayala Extension), turn right at Malugay, cross Sen. Gil Puyat to Tordesillas. The rightmost lane was long, so I took a right after H. V. dela Costa, turned right to Leviste, turned left to Rufino, crossed Ayala, turned right to dela Costa and parked in the parking lot on the right, at the corner of Geronimo and dela Rosa. (The Google Map seems to be missing Geronimo).

If you take the rightmost lane, you can turn right at dela Costa, cross to Ayala to Geronimo, turn right at Amorsolo, follow the road until you reach Makati Med, turn right up to the driveway for valet parking. The parking building entrance is after the driveway, and the entrance to the parking lot beside Makati Med is after the parking building entrance. Both are almost always full, so I've resorted to parking at the treeful parking lot on Legazpi Street. From dela Rosa, turn left at Rufino, turn left at Legazpi Street. It's on the right. Walk to Salcedo Street at the right. turn left at dela Rosa until you see Makati Med, where there's a side entrance.

Anyway, Harvey texted me today that he is in Makati on Wednesdays and Fridays, 8 to 5. He is in Binondo Mondays 9 to 5, and Thursdays, 2 to 5. His Binondo clinic is on the Ground Floor, Pacific Center (formerly Pacificbank), 460 Quintin Paredes St. Dr. Sheri's husband told me that it's near the old Dragon Seed, Jollibee and Red Ribbon. Dr. Sheri and I know people who are excited with his Binondo clinic, as it is quite near where they live or frequent.

He is at St. Luke's Quezon City on Saturdays, 8-5, Room 611, South Tower, Cathedral Heights. When you enter St. Luke's from E. Rodriguez, Sr. Ave., it's the building on the left. The last time I was in St. Luke's last month, in the evening, so I parked at Cathedral Heights. I went up the driveway, then turned left to the parking building.

The appointment numbers for all clinics are 890-01-15 or 0917-8749202. The email address is appointment@pacificeye.com.ph. For St. Luke's Quezon City, the appointment numbers are 411-41-12 or 723-01-01 loc. 2611. I tried to access pacific.com.ph and got their login page.

The only clinic which will have an optical shop is Makati. The optical shop will open end-January. Across his Binondo clinic is Crystal, an optical shop owned by ex-AEI optometrists who he said I would recognize.

Incidentally, my previous post on his clinic still got 20 out of the 123 views yesterday.

Queen of the Night

Unfortunately, my camrea was low-batt when it bloomed.

My friend, who has seen the Queen of the Night bloomless, has been asking me to show the photo of the actual plant in bloom, even though I had posted in my Fb soup of albums.

I have been going to Tagaytay every couple of weeks since last year, and it was only last August 19 that I got to catch it.

My cousin and -in-law would even drive all the way from Metro Manila to Tagaytay on a weekday evening just to see it in bloom, then drive back to Metro Manila.

I found it so intriguing that when my friend was thinking of plants to give to her aunt based in Antipolo, I suggested it, since I know of someone who grows it in San Juan, although their version is smaller than the Tagaytay version. My friend said that it was not practical, since the objective was to beautify the garden.  How can you beautify your garden when the plant is green most of the time?  Oo nga no.

Anyway, it was certainly more beautiful than I had imagined, and more beautiful than I could photograph.
